ocean of peace , walking mindfully into the new year

"When we walk like (we are running), we print anxiety and sorrow on the earth. We have to walk in a way that we only print peace and serenity on the earth... Be aware of the contact between your feet and the earth. Walk as if you are kissing the earth with your feet."  - Thich Nhat Hanh

shortest day, longest night 12/21/15

"will wonders never cease ?"
must be an irish expression
grandma o' riordan, as i recall
when something surprised her,
restored her sense of mystery

may our wonders never end
as to wandering - that too ?
there is once again no certainty
to understand what must be beyond me

along for the ride, starry eyed
wake, sleep, move, dream
(i once was) a jewel inside, now lost
now found
many facets it would seem

when asking twenty questions
of any person, place or thing
do we want to only seek response
in the wondering ?

cats and bowls of fruit

living in a house with my many cousins
and their bowls of fruit
they leave them anywhere
lopsided mandalas

and i want to arrange them for their benefit
and mine, i suppose
seeking order

the psyche responds
another brutal blast to the world house
attempts repair in the kitchen
is the dream a prayer?

nurturance
setting the bowls in a row
so that each will wake up to fruit to start their day
the cousins
or aspects of self
or every living soul

i go to my mother's house then
like stepping back and i have to stay the night
doesn't feel quite right
when there is work to do

she moves through her own kitchen in the dream
and we greet, but she floats away
i'm left to be careless and break a glass
into a thousand shards

a cat and her kitten approach
my mind goes to their tender paws
and i move to shield
but nothing bad happens
seems to be a returning theme

the glass is there
the cats are safe
the world isn't and it is
there might have been more to it
why i went there in the first place
just out of reach
as i awake

happy birthday dad 9/15/15

Robert Eugene Hinich, younger son of Edna and Nikola, was born September 15, 1921. My grandparents immigrated from Croatia and were Socialists to the core. That they settled in Milwaukee, WI was probably no accident. Older brother Daniel was named for Daniel Hoan, the second Socialist mayor of Milwaukee. Milwaukee's had three, Daniel preceded by Emil Seidel and followed later by Frank Zeidler (3 terms 1948-1960). They gave Robert his middle name out of respect for Eugene Debs, an American union leader, anti-war activist,  and five times the candidate of the Socialist Party of America for President of the United States. My grandparents had their own grocery store. I recall grandpa standing in his living room reading the Serbo-Croat newspapers, and knew he regularly attended political meetings.  Robert and siblings got the message: work hard not only for your dreams but the right for all to have a decent life.  When I think of my grandmother and her work ethic compared to mine - well I look like a candy ass. Edna was not a sugar and spice sort of grandma and did not spend time or money on frivolities. She was tough, known to spit out a German curse word (her country by birth) if you opened the door when the strudel dough was rising.  My mother as a newlywed learned this the hard way. I usually got "eat, eat,  you are too skinny", and a bowl of steaming hot chicken and rice or dumplings would appear from nowhere.  Everything was made at home.  I have her foot pedal sewing machine.

The apple didn't fall far in my father's case and he learned from these two people how to embrace your family and by further extension the world-family.  Money was useful, but it was not a god. He in turn gifted his own children by his actions not just talk.  The man lived in a small aluminum trailer for the last years of his too short life, partly by necessity, but he also seemed to enjoy it. He knew it was right and fair to provide my mother and their younger child with maximum support. Dad took an interest early on in the environment, when many were asleep. Rachel Carson was on his list of heroes. I remember him showing me the amount of garbage he actually threw away in one month, it was the size of a very small grocery bag. He read abundantly and so of course we did too. He took us to plays and lectures, coffee houses and piano bars. Road trips along the California coastline from San Francisco to San Diego. We looked up and identified the constellations, before light pollution extinguished all but the brightest. He tutored me in math - my worst subject. To him, math was beauty and symmetry, hence his love for Pi.

Dad came to visit me every week at my first apartment in Huntington Beach, whistling a tune as he walked up the alley. To be in the moment was easy for him.  What we got: look deeply, use your words well, question authority, don't waste your breath on small talk, or your time on closed minds, learn, enjoy life.  He did have a temper, but it was never physical. Although he did punch a hole in my closed bedroom door after I smarted off brattily to my mom one too many times. I was probably 16, he was visiting and witnessed how I had become a bit of a handful, a child of divorce disrespecting her mother where she heaped all the blame. Complicated feelings for all in that incident, looking back

I found the cards I gave him, birthday gift drawings, a cross-stitch coaster, in his small collection of personal belongings.
"What do you want for your birthday dad?"
"Make me something; that's what I'd like."

I've been working on this post, thinking about him lately - conjuring some of his "be here now" attitude.

Is it strange to wish your father a happy birthday after he's  no longer really "here"?  Maybe so. He's not advanced a year, is no longer a slave to linear time.

how it feels in the dream

a five year old brother
a grown sister, the open window  - a full moon

that is why we are so emotional, i say -
tell me about the windmill there, beautiful and still

a woman built it, and now it is still beautiful

i give comfort; the small brother keeps close

mom’s sewing basket, needles and pins fall out
i move to secure and contain – so we won’t hurt our bare feet

there is a presence, and a question
i answer well

then watch the departure line, belongings go -  things also, gone
another sister from before, she wears my silver shoes

i realize..

... although it seems sometimes that a huge percentage of music is about romantic love, failed romantic love, unrequited love - that's not all there is. obviously. but i like so many of those songs - can't do without 'em. what can i say? anyway, though i favor the moody minor chords, there's got to be an alternate playlist.  now where are those rose-colored glasses...?

"I Feel Good" -  James Brown
 that's a no brainer

"This Girl is on Fire" - Alicia Keyes
never actually heard this one, but when i search for upbeat songs there 'tis.  i guess when you want to puff yourself up to overblown proportions, or if you're feeling "iffy" - might work

still on a 'girl' theme, there's always Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun"
(and damn it - i do)

an obvious choice: Pharrel's "Happy"  although this can produce an annoying semi-permanent ear worm...

described as "even a sad song (from the Jackson 5) can make you feel happy"
hey- they're right- let's dance!!
takes me back to those sweet innocent days...   "I Want You Back"

"With a Little Help From My Friends" - The Beatles  , "lend me your ears and i'll sing you a song and i'll try not to sing out of key" (no promises)

"You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio" - Joni Mitchell   - i've always liked this one!

"My Cherie Amour"  - Stevie Wonder   - pure bliss
1969,  8th grade, Brian Flaherty..  how did i delve back into love songs again..?

"Do You Believe in Magic" - John Sebastian
Well, YEAH!  think we have a winner for today...

guitar therapy

giving my one song and songwriting a rest for a little while; just messing around with other stuff. still rusty on what i used to know, which wasn't extensive. but i am playing a lot and wanting to learn something new. not sure why I let my guitar gather dust. now the years fall away and it’s water flowing under the bridge. we hug each other; feels right.

it was suggested that i get a mike (thanks Jeff) -  so i did. still have to practice getting right on top of it and keeping my volume up. also experimenting with video editing, so i put a reverb on these clips and used a posterize filter with Adobe Premiere Pro. have to see if i can get higher quality/larger file size uploaded.

this song is sort of a bitter lament, but i only chose it because it's all minor chords, just 3 - simple.  and it is well within my limited vocal range. "I Just Don't Understand" was written by Kent Westberry & Marijohn Wilkin, first covered by Ann-Margaret and then the Beatles.  but i only know the cover by Spoon.  just now listening to Ann-Margaret's version - i like her voice.

i prefer the vocals on the first clip.  but the strumming technique is better on the second, a few misses though and guitar overpowering voice.  after i practice this song another 75 times, it might start to sound ok.

a bridge

youtube clip

a clip from my song, oh heck.. i guess it's called 'crazy talk'. i kept it really simple, chord-wise and lyrics too. i decided the melancholy can stay.  i am advocating more deep listening than talk for myself of late. this isn't an instrumental so, i gave the words a shot.

my beloved E minor plays a part, although another enthusiast recently advised me to use it sparingly. too much of a good thing and all that. so there's two verses, a break, whatever this is - a bridge or chorus, first verse again. experimented with adobe premiere pro for this clip of what i am calling the bridge.

note: video not supported in samsung galaxy s6

while my guitar gently...

..tolerates my general roughhousing and questionable vocal skills...  of course it can give back as good as it gets, biting into and slowly callousing my coddled fingertips. you know how with anything it can hurt while you're learning, but you don't want to stop?  because of the payoff on other levels. because you actually want to learn more. several times i actually checked to make sure they weren't bleeding. yesterday, i had new lighter steel strings installed. just means i will be able to play a little longer before it gets uncomfortable,  at least until i develop more formidable callouses. checking their progress - pinkie not so much, but ring, middle and index have new character. yeah i'm so tough now - hah.

i love the minor chords, truly i do. E minor for instance is the love of my life. there is no substitute for that sweet yet melancholy sound. any excuse to sneak Em into a song...it's that compelling. there's also an "easy" version of F# minor - that elusive Iberian, previously unavailable - now we share a casual friendship over coffee or perhaps a hoppy IPA. lately any song i want to play, within reason, i'll give it a go - but if the chords involve too many digital gymnastics (pesky barre chords still a struggle) well then, no.

more fun though to play the one song i wrote, the only one so far. it's done, yet i'm still tinkering.  perhaps i should whittle down the whining, and wait - where's that silver lining?  there needs to be a bright one, in a song that at first listen is more than a little glum. the chords could use some work, the first part sort of blah: G C, G C, G C,  followed by Em C, Em C.

mopey songs with a measure of hope are in my nature, if my other writing is any indication.
trying to imagine a poem or song where i wax ecstatic about how great everything is.
nah - i'll take the sweet with the melancholy any day.

accident ?

So as revealed in this view of my thoracic cavity, the 5th rib is fractured. A strange accident, but nothing is an accident.  Lessons from medical science - I really do look like this, under the layers, a bleached white skeleton, now with a brand new break.

The ribs cradle several organs, a beautiful structure, like an open cage. The 5th rib is a "true" one, connected to the sternum. Not "false" or "floating" like some other ribs. Number 5 also has biblical references. Someone smote someone else just under it - he died.  Adam might have gifted Eve his 5th rib - one close to his heart.  Medical maps, biblical babbling. What does it mean to me, why did it happen?

Not watching out for myself I think - my body temple, my heart. Doc says it will take 4-6 weeks to heal. Think I am at week 1-1/2. Radiology tech tells me I have "pretty ribs". Oh shucks, bet he says that to all the ladies.

real words , sometimes too real

i had a thought..
don't actually remember it
just that it was a good one
maybe it was part of a daydream
about answers
written on slips of paper
like fortunes only better
the questions, quiet
but the scrolls, unfurling,
they ask to be read, to be considered
they are very clear, which is nice

i just remembered the thought -
the words want to have a space, a place
inside
but you have to be careful, if you let them weave a way
into your being

it's almost impossible to remove them,
especially since you are convinced that you want them to stay

more to do

right action
i am not without it
even underwater
not helpless
these moves
not insignificant
expand incrementally
and with intention
recognition
taking
the flying leap -
walk, find, to be with
right action

god spelled differently is...

sky so blue it aches
an arc, uncontained

earth turning, asking
lightening striking

perfect bliss
broken glass

what is desired and avoided

your footsteps
your echoes

heavy lidded eyes of the diety
looking out from inside you
and me

good work, loving souls
swift kicks, open doors
all god

agiocochook

a sacred mountain, should be a good place to start or end up, or land at any point in between.
home of the Great Spirit, i offered a sprinkling of tobacco, out of respect.  respect would mean, for myself, for others, for the earth.  i can only pray that that translates in the descent, back into whatever awaits me...whatever i create.  do no harm, do no harm...not always possible. not everyone around me can be happy with my every move. protect the planet, but of course it winces under the load. even interplanetary visitors, they might be dismayed by my choices. even the past, the future -  might roll their overbearing eyes.  but since their existence is suspect and there is only now - now on the summit, now typing this, now asleep and dreaming...now - i'll take my chances..

quiet and rain

so quiet and now there's rain
got the wild woods just out there

coyote, fisher, fox, black bear...

i sleep and hope to wake
to the sounds they make
deep forest,  good night

last night

last night, an owl called me from my sleep
on the edge of a dream
but he was real
who-who ?  whooo-whooo,
two short, two long
i kept still - listening, until he went away

now i need my rest
but he can wake me anytime
it's been so long since i have heard from him

"i rejoice that there are owls"

front
Medicine bag titled:  baohi'gan , for presentation: Thoreau Society Annual Gathering 2015

Joe Polis was Thoreau's Native American Penobscot guide employed for one of his travels to the Maine North Woods . Maine folklorist Fannie Eckstorm, whose family had a close acquaintance with the Penobscot Indians, remarks that Polis had "a mind that knew the advantage of control of unseen forces and the reputation for being a shaman" (The "Domestic Air" of Wilderness: Henry Thoreau & Joe Polis in the Maine Woods, By Thomas P. Lynch)

Anthropologist Frank Speck's discussion in Penobscot Shamanism:"Every magician [such as Polis] had his helper which seems to have been an animal's body into which he could transfer his state of being at will. The helper then is known by the term baohi'gan, a very interesting term which may be explained as meaning 'instrument of mystery"

From Thomas Lynch:
"One might readily speculate, and speculate is all one might do, that Polis's baohi°'gan was an owl. Note that before discovering the phosphorescent wood, Thoreau was awakened by the hoot of an owl, and that at several other points of the journey Polis imitates an owl's hooting: "a cat owl [Great Horned Owl] flew heavily over the stream, and he, asking if I knew what it was imitated very well the common hoo, hoo, hoo, hoorer, hoo, of our woods"
back
From Walden:
"I rejoice that there are owls...
It is a sound admirably suited to swamps and twilight woods which no day illustrates, suggesting a vast and undeveloped nature which men have not recognized." Henry David Thoreau
